Any other ideas here for software?
For years I have used a DVD Recorder to save copies of shows (mostly tennis matches, a few documentaries) - this gives me permanent copies of selected DVR recordings that I can then delete from the DVR. I get playable discs of shows independent of my service provider that I play back on any DVD player.

My Genie2 DVR is model HR44. I've replaced the DVD Recorder a couple of times. My current recorder has stopped recording but will still play DVDs. Instead of buying another DVD Recorder, I am interested in finding a new way to permanently save shows from the Directv DVR on an external device. I read in this forum that buying an external DVR would tie me to the Directv configuration, and I would not have independent recordings. I'd also like to play my recordings without any provider's assistance or involvement. Does anyone know how I can address my issue?

Thank you, LS. Hi, thank you SHSPVR, I would answer your questions this way: 1.
I am ready to move on from DVDs and Blu-Ray; one advantage will be better resolution, I believe. I would be happy using my laptop as the controller for these recordings, instead of DVDs. I'd like to stay away from recording directly from the Directv DVR to the laptop or PC DVR if possible. Is it possible to use the Directv DVR as I have been doing, as an intermediary, and then pull recordings over to the PC DVR? But it may not make any difference if I record to a PC DVR that I can control like the built-in unit I'm used to. I recommend you stop by the Videohelp forum for Blu-ray Authoring as there not a lot option here I recommend that you get HD-PVR 2 model 1512 being that it come with WinTV and that way you can make use of IR Blaster if need be or can just used Hauppauge Capture Tool for manuel recording and you want used the Component output from you DirecTV DVR or even a Genie Client.
Yes you can use HDMI but you need pick up HDMI splitter and google PS3 + HDMI splitter or look on the above forum you see why. You have some option with PC DVR look for SageTV, NextPVR and even WinTV for automate time slot schedule recording with the IR Blaster but note WinTV doesn't have a build option for get EPG (Electronic Program Guide) it used a web EPG called Titan TV. I can be found on SageTV, Emby, Plex, NextPVR Videohelp and min other PVR/DVR forum just look for SHS or SHSPVR.
